The Ultimate Guide to Tattoo Care: The Dos and Don'ts for Long-Lasting Ink

Posted by Abeola Johnson on

Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, but taking care of it properly is what ensures your ink heals beautifully and lasts a lifetime. A fresh tattoo is essentially an open wound, and without proper aftercare, you risk infections, excessive scabbing, and fading.

At Derma Warrior, we believe in natural, effective skincare that nourishes your skin while it heals. Our products are designed to soothe, protect, and hydrate, making them perfect for your tattoo aftercare routine. Here’s everything you need to know about tattoo care, plus how our products can help your new ink heal without a hitch.

The Dos of Tattoo Care

1. Keep It Clean (But Gentle!)

Right after getting your tattoo, your artist will apply a protective film. Once removed (as per their advice), wash the area gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, like our Gentle Body Wash. It’s sulfate-free and won’t strip your skin of moisture, helping to cleanse without irritation.

2. Moisturize Without Clogging Pores

Dry, flaky skin and scabbing can cause your tattoo to heal unevenly. Keeping it hydrated is crucial, but the wrong moisturizer can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Our Moisturizing Body Cream is formulated with nourishing ingredients like shea butter and colloidal oatmeal, making it the perfect lightweight, non-greasy choice for fresh ink.

3. Protect Your Ink With a Healing Balm

Scabs are a normal part of the tattoo healing process, but excessive scabbing can pull out ink and cause patchy spots. Our Healing Balm is packed with plantain leaf extract and Vitamin E, both of which soothe irritation and help prevent excessive scabbing while allowing your tattoo to heal naturally.

4. Let It Breathe, But Keep It Covered When Needed

For the first few nights, cover your tattoo with clean, breathable bandages to prevent bacteria from entering. During the day, let it breathe, but avoid direct sun exposure, which can cause fading and irritation.

5. Soothe Itching Without Scratching

As your tattoo heals, itching is inevitable. Instead of scratching (which can cause damage), use our TSW Zinc Balm to create a protective barrier and calm the skin. With zinc oxide and calendula extract, it relieves irritation and speeds up healing.

The Don’ts of Tattoo Care

1. Don’t Pick at Scabs or Peeling Skin

It might be tempting to peel off dry skin, but doing so can lead to scarring and patchy ink. Let your skin shed naturally, and keep it moisturized with our Moisturizing Body Cream to minimize peeling.

2. Avoid Swimming & Soaking in Water

For at least 2-3 weeks, avoid swimming, hot tubs, and baths, as submerging your tattoo can cause ink fading and infections. Instead, if you want to enjoy a relaxing moment, soak your hands or feet in a bucket of water with our Oat Bath Soak—a gentle way to hydrate dry, irritated skin without fully submerging your fresh tattoo.

3. Say No to Harsh Soaps & Fragranced Lotions

Avoid using regular soaps, scented lotions, or products with alcohol, as these can dry out your tattoo and cause irritation. Stick to gentle, fragrance-free products like our Gentle Body Wash to cleanse without disrupting the healing process.

4. Don’t Expose It to the Sun Too Soon

Sun exposure can cause your tattoo to fade prematurely. Always cover your tattoo with loose clothing or apply a natural SPF (after it has fully healed!) to protect the ink from UV damage.

5. Don’t Overdo the Moisturizer

While keeping your tattoo hydrated is essential, over-moisturizing can clog pores and prevent proper healing. Use a thin layer of our Moisturizing Body Cream or Healing Balm, just enough to soothe and hydrate without suffocating the skin.

Protective Zinc Balm for Dry, Sensitive & Reactive Skin

When your skin is cracked, sore and struggling, this is the balm I'd reach for.

Our bestselling Zinc Barrier Balm is a rich, protective balm created for dry, sensitive, reactive and flare-prone skin.Made with zinc oxide, bentonite clay, jojoba oil, cocoa butter and our five-herb infused olive oil, it creates a protective layer over vulnerable skin when your skin needs extra support. Originally created with Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) skin in mind, it has become a go-to for customers looking for simple, targeted barrier support during difficult skin days.

Fragrance-free • Vegan • Steroid-free • Made in the UK

Description:

This balm was created for those going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal, to help dry ooze during the withdrawal stage and help heal red lesions. This treatment balm is a blend of pharmaceutical-grade Zinc Oxide(30%) with other healing oils and butters. Zinc forces skin regeneration so it is good for rashes, scars, minor skin irritations, and eczema. Bentonite is great for detoxing the skin it helps absorbs and remove toxins.

Ingredients:

Zinc Oxide, Bentonite, Ricinus communis seed (castor) oil, Olea europaea fruit (olive) oil, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, Theobroma cacao seed (cocoa) butter, Euphorbia cerifera cera candelilla wax, Althaea Officinalis (Marshmallow) root extract, Achillea millefolium (yarrow) extract, Plantago lanceolata (plantain)leaf extract, Calendula officinalis flower extract, Symphytum officinale (comfrey)leaf extract

Directions:

Apply a small amount directly to coat the skin, after a bath and cover with clothing, socks, gloves, or gauze for optimal results. Best used at night. May stain clothing and furniture. For very dry areas that also need additional nourishment, pair with our Healing Balm

Who is our Zinc Balm for?

Our Zinc Barrier Balm has been created for people looking for extra support for:

•Dry, sensitive and reactive skin

•Very dry or cracked areas

•Flare-prone skin

•Skin affected by TSW

•Areas that need additional barrier protection

•Difficult skin days when your usual routine doesn't feel like enough

This isn't an everyday moisturiser. It's targeted barrier support for when your skin needs something more.

Why Zinc Oxide?

Zinc oxide sits on the surface of the skin, helping create a physical protective barrier between vulnerable skin and the outside environment. We've paired it with bentonite clay, nourishing plant oils and our signature five-herb infusion to create a rich balm designed for targeted use.

Please note: Zinc oxide naturally leaves a visible white cast. That's completely normal for this product.
